US State Secretary Rice calls for swift name row settlement

I hope for Athens and Skopje to soon come to a mutually acceptable solution to the name row, thus enabling Macedonia's accession to NATO, which is strongly supported by the United States, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice Thursday in New York after meeting Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis.
- It is most important for the matter to be settled as soon as possible. We are trying to help in finding a solution that will be acceptable for both parties, Rice said.
US Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Fried sent a same message today at a meeting with Macedonian President Branko Crvenkovski.
- US expects Macedonia and Greece to demonstrate serious approach in relation to the latest ideas put forward by UN name dispute mediator Matthew Nimetz. All efforts should be made towards finding a solution, which will open NATO, EU doors to Macedonia. The United States are interested the name row issue to be closed and therefore the country resumes to support the negotiation process led by mediator Nimetz, noted Fried. |
